Michelle Lee or famously known as ‘Froya’ on stage, traces her childhood back in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah where she recalls spending a fraction of it as a classical piano student. However, things took a turn when she decided to pursue contemporary music as her degree and later discovered that her passion was in songwriting and music production.

1. Why ‘Froya’?

I like the sound of it and also because it means Goddess of Love and Beauty in Nordic.

2. Why do you think it’s important for Malaysians to be involved and support the local music scene?

Everyone plays a part in making the industry better, not just from the musicians themselves, but the audience too. We (musicians) can’t survive if nobody shows up and supports our shows or buys our music. Just like local farmers, they can’t survive if nobody buys their products and fresh produce. Sometimes people don’t realize that local produce could be as fresh and good as imported. Same goes with the music industry.

3. How do you overcome stage fright when performing, if any?

It’s more like a perspective shift for me. I came across an article about overcoming stage fright. It mentioned performing is all about sharing your art and music. There is absolutely no reason why you need to fear it when you’re trying to share your joy with others. With that piece of advice in my head, I always thank people who show up and listen to my musical at the show. I try my best to focus on expressing my music rather than my irrational fear.

4. Three things not many know about you?

  • I used to work in a hotel as a lounge pianist.
  • I got married recently to a wonderful husband who’s also a sound engineer and music producer.
  • I once got held hostage by a gang of monkeys at a waterfall in Langkawi for almost half and hour, which I fortunately managed to escape with no casualties.

5. What can audiences expect from you at the Good Vibes 2018?

I’ll be performing a balance of released and unreleased music on the Froya’s set. On top of that, I’m excited to showcase a new collaboration track that I’ve been working on with both international and local artists during my set. It is a track that I’ve owed to my fans for a very long time.
