“I’M IN JAIL FOR ARMED GANG ROBBERY”

I was only 21 years old when the judge sentenced me to 10 years in jail for charges of armed gang robbery. There was no fanfare or fuss – only a peaceful sort of acceptance. This wasn’t my first robbery, having voluntarily committed crimes since the tender age of 18 – along with my husband, who was my boyfriend at the time.

Helping my mother

I was first pulled into this life not because of greed, but because I wanted to help my mother. She was the sole breadwinner of the family, as my father never once provided spousal support. I couldn’t bear to watch her slough away at work day in, day out and was moved to do something about the situation. Even though I would lend a hand with her business, the income was barely enough and even if I were to get a regular job, it wouldn’t be enough to make ends meet. So, I chose the easy way out, despite knowing that it was wrong. My mother knew of the dark hole I was tumbling down into but there was nothing she could say or do to stop me – her words simply fell on deaf ears.
