Do you know that cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer? The key is in detecting it early, and starting off with treatment. So, it really starts with screening and regular checkups.
“Early prevention is the answer to stopping this disease in its tracks. Our National HPV Immunisation Programme has achieved vaccination coverage of over 90 percent among 13-year-old girls, protecting them against the main types of Human Papilloma Virus that cause cervical cancer,”shared Deputy Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Dr Wan Ismail during her speech at the launch of R.O.S.E (Removing Obstacles to Cervical Screening).
The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, through the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN), has implemented HPV vaccinations through the HPV Vaccination Catch Up Program that began in 2012. The programmes targets women aged 18 and above who meet the eligibility requirements, and have never been vaccinated.
From 2012 to 2018, 365,143 women who fulfilled these criteria received the HPV vaccination for free and 75 percent of them completed all 3 doses. However, Dr. Wan Azizah adds that the cervical screening falls far below the WHO’s target of 70 percent as the current rate is 12.8 percent, which is a far cry from WHO’s target.
