IS IT OKAY TO LIE TO YOUR CHILDREN?

Ever caught yourself lying to someone in front of your kids? We asked our expert Racheal Kwacz, child and family development specialist if there was any situation where it’s justified as parents to tell ‘little white lies’ in the presence of kids. Here’s what she says.

When you sneak out

Picture this: as you step out the door to work, the distant wails of your little one can be heard from even inside the car. “Separation anxiety can stem from constantly lying to your child. It’s either you sneak out because you don’t want to deal with the emotions, or you think it’ll be better for the both of you. Rather than lessening the pain, you’ll cause your child to constantly worry that whenever they turn their backs, you’ll disappear,” points out child specialist Racheal Kwacz.

Instead: Always say goodbye. “Even if there is a meltdown, it gives toddlers the space to process their emotions and the temporary separation. That is a big part of respectful and mindful parenting.”
