With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we are reminded of the greatest love stories of all time. Cleopatra and Mark Anthony, Romeo and Juliet, Pocahontas and John Smith – they all had one thing in common – yes: passion, love, lust but most notably tragic endings.
Maybe that’s why they continue to remain as the most memorable ones.
Here are a few more saddest love stories from history and legends to tug at that hopeless romantic heartstring of yours.
1. Tristan and Isolde
Tristan was sent by his uncle King Mark of Ireland to escort his betrothed, Isolde, Princess of Ireland back to Cornwall. During the voyage, the two fell in love after drinking a magic potion. Despite Isolde’s getting wed to King Mark, the two continued their relationship. The most feared eventually came after the furious King Mark found out about the news. Tristan and Isolde were sentenced to hang and be burnt respectively.
The two managed to escape and made peace with Mark after Tristan agreed to return Isolde to Mark and leave the country. Heartbroken, Tristan travelled to Britanny where he met and married a maiden with a similar name to his love – Iseult.
One day, Tristan fell ill and sent for Isolde in hopes that she would be able to cure him. It was agreed that if Isolde agrees to come, the returning ship’s sails would be white and if she refuses the sails would be black. Iseult, seeing the white sails, lied to Tristan and told him that the sails were black. He died of grief before Isolde could reach him. In the end, Isolde, too, died from a broken heart.
