6 THING YOU NEED KNOW ABOUT YEE SANG

You’ve probably already had a few Yee Sang, or Yü Sheng by now. And since the Chinese New Year celebration is for two weeks, this delicacy decked with colourful ingredients and sweet and sour plum sauce will still be popular for the period.

Meaning of yü sheng (魚生)

In Chinese, yü sheng (魚生) means ‘raw fish’. However, it has another meaning, which is ‘plenty of wealth and long life’. In Cantonese it is pronounced as ‘lo sang’ and tossing it is called ‘lo hei’. ‘Lo’ means to toss while ‘hei’ means ‘rise’. It can also mean flourishing in business and wealth.
