Today, we understand the need to lead a healthy lifestyle. We exercise frequently and stick by healthy eating habits, such as an all-organic or gluten-free diet – all to feel and look good in the healthiest possible way. NASTY NO.1: PARABENS
Paraben is a common preservative used in beauty products. This is because it’s a cheap and effective preservative. But parabens mimic oestrogen and can act as potential hormone (endocrine) system disruptors. It can be toxic even when absorbed in moderate amounts.
NASTY NO.2: MINERAL OILS (eg: parrafinum liquidum)
Mineral oil is odourless. It’s derived as a byproduct of the distillation of petroleum to produce gasoline. You’ll most often find it in moisturisers, lotions, creams, cosmetics, and ointments as it’s a good emollient. However, mineral oil can become contaminated and comedogenic, clogging pores and resulting in blackheads and breakouts.
NASTY NO.3: MERCURY
Mercury is commonly found in skin-lightening and toning products simply because it’s inexpensive. Now, it’s being widely banned in skincare as long-term usage leads to mercury poisoning.
Are there other Nasties out there?
Aside from parabens, mineral oils and mercury, other controversial ingredients include tetrasodium EDTA (made from ethylenediamine), formaldehyde, sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), aluminium salts, silicone (dimethicone), and propylene glycol.
