Health and Beauty Benefits of Cucumbers

This may come as a surprise to a few, but the cucumber is actually a fruit! One deciding factor is that it has seeds running right through its middle, although it’s worth noting that the English cucumber is seedless. Nonetheless, if you’re looking for a healthy office munch come noon, Megan Ware, a registered dietician in Florida, shares that the cucumber is low in calories, carbohydrates, sodium, fat, and cholesterol – plus, it’s 95 per cent water.

In fact, Megan adds that if you were to wolf down an entire cup of cucumber with its peel still on, you’ll only be taking in 16 calories – inclusive of four per cent of your daily potassium needs and three per cent of your daily fibre needs. To top it off, you’ll also be taking in vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin K, magnesium, and manganese!

Cucumbers are usually segregated into two categories: the long ones are meant for slicing, while the shorter ones are to be pickled. When shopping for them, make sure your choice is firm to the touch and free of blemishes. Soft spots are a sign that they’re beginning to rot, and wrinkles indicate that their moisture content may have been compromised from being stored for too long or at high temperatures.
